  2. Holiness Beyond Morality
    1. Faith is not just about being moral/ethical/good
    2. First, it’s about worship
      1. If you get it backwards, end up with the wrong god
        1. Then, the wrong morals
      2. If you start with love self- or culturally-defined
        1. The God of the Bible won’t fit your definition of love
          1. Option 1: Reject the Bible, or some of it
            1. Results in different god
            2. Results in different morals, ever shifting
          2. Option 2: change my/cultural definition of love to fit Scritpure
    3. Shaped by love
      1. “Beloved”- those chosen and loved by God
      2. Both the apex and defining principle of good
  3. Set Apart
    1. For holiness - being like God
      1. For holy love
        1. Not just any love, any definition
        2. Not (just) a feeling
          1. Result of obedience to the truth
          2. Requires purification of the soul
            1. Not natural
          3. It’s only possible after the New Birth
            1. Born from new, supernatural life
            2. Grows into salvation/eternal life
        3. Specific, concrete
          1. Sincere/fervent/earnest love from the (pure) heart (1:22)/with all your heart (NLT)
            1. Without play-acting/pretense (contrast to hypocrisy)
            2. Persevering/constant (derivatives of ἐκτείνω)
            3. How can this be commanded/exhorted?

            1. Harmonious/unity of mind (ESV) /of one mind (KJV)
              1. Is this possible?
            2. Sympathetic/sympathy/having compassion
              1. Understanding, feeling with, suffering with
            3. Brotherly (love)/love as brethren
            4. Kindhearted/tender heart/ be pitiful (KJV)
            5. Humble in spirit/mind/courteous (KJV)
            6. Never returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead

  4. Communal/Corporate Necessity of Holiness
    1. 1 Pet. 2:4-10 - living stones (in the Temple)
    2. Wesley: “The gospel of Christ knows of no religion, but social; no holiness but social holiness. Faith working by love, is the length and breadth and depth and height of Christian perfection.”
    3. Vague sense of Christian brotherhood
      1. People treat the church like a whore
        1. Come and go as we please
        2. Other people in church are incidental to my faith & worship
      2. Must be concrete
        1. Requires regular engagement with the same people
  5. Conclusion
    1. Mothers (& others), love with a holy love
      1. Why wouldn’t you
        1. Knowledge of former sins
        2. Maybe currently in sin (hypocrite)
        3. Fear of chasing off your children
    2. Be a holy mother in the church
    3. Be holy in your love for one another
      1. Not as the world loves
